Changes to the music industry

This industry is scrambling to keep hold on their control over entertainers, and their intellectual property by aggressively trying to control the copyright issue, screwing the entertainers, locking them into ownership contracts. This is unfair to the entertainers. In talking to a lot of entertainers, musicians and the like, I'm noting down some very important items on their wish list. They are:

Better and more fair promotion mechanism

Nobody is going to buy their music if they haven't heard about it. The casual music listener has to actively go out looking for music through iTunes and other web based music. In the past, radio has been a major conduit to match new songs with music consumers.

People are always so busy, and hardly have time to browse through iTunes looking for something they like. Often the only time I know about a song is by listening to the internet radio, but like most stations, they often know little about where to go to buy the songs they hear. People hear a song, like it, then buy it if they like it. Our current system makes it very hard to find out what song is playing, and where to buy it.

Our innovative "Instant buy" feature makes paying for commercial music as quick as a single click. On your iPhone while using iRadio, your desktop while listing to your favorite station, or laptop. When you get home, the song is waiting for you in your custom area on the portal. Other promotion is usually done by the record companies under some contractual agreement for arranging air play, live concerts, and such. This can now change, by the fact that it's no longer necessary for an entertainer to rely on a record company for promotion, they can now do it themselves with much better results.
Musicians are always wanting to learn how popular their music is, and how it's accepted by their consumers. The current system is scattered, and unreliable in obtaining "Proof of fame". Currently, and in the past, the record companies usually deal with this. We have the technology to address this, so entertainers can join our planned online portal where they can collaborate with online radio stations subscribing to our Portal. Radio stations subscribing gets a free Playlist manager with extra features for tracking air play, then sending this information back to the entertainer with little to no action from the radio station. The stations benefit as they get free access to the band's music for airplay and promotional consideration, so everyone wins. The stations also must agree to make it easy for the entertainer to purchase what they play by providing information on the band, their URL, either via the announcer, or in the streaming "text" that comes through shoutcast.

Several different business models are being considered. One model is to develop a streaming radio for Mac's and iPhones that has a "Buy" button in it, so when you hear something you like, you can instantly "buy" it. You can order these songs as you hear them on your iPhone. Then when you like what you hear, a single button click will allow you to purchase the song, and it winds up in your private portal space for instant download.

There are other models that offer free music, where the artists make money in other ways.

Imagine a Kiosk at a bus station...

With a lot of music on the WEB, through their own marketing efforts. Now major entertainers like Radio Head, and Nine Inch Nails are discovering they don't need to rely on record companies as much as in the past.
you are faced with an 8 hour bus ride, you are tired of hearing your current songs. The kiosk offers free music. You have 15 minutes before the bus leaves, so you connect your iPod to the kiosk, and as you progress through the selections sampling them, you get a running count on the download times... you just download the music, and away you go.
